Different Concrete Additives

Additives are combined with a mixture of cement and water to help with control setting, and hardening, which makes the concrete set properly. These additives can be in either liquid or powder form.

Additives can be added at the site of manufacturing or on-site. At T&T Redi Mix, we make sure to follow the recommended amount to combine with the water/cement mixture.

Additives can be separated into two categories, chemical additives and mineral additives. Which type is used all depends on the nature of the project.

Chemical Additives

Used to:

  • Reduce the cost of the project
  • Overcome emergencies at concrete operations
  • Guarantee quality during the entire process, from mixing to curation
  • Modify hardened concrete

Mineral Additives

Used to:

  • Increase the strength of concrete
  • Economize on the mixture
  • Reduce the permeability levels
  • Adjust the nature of hardened concrete through the use of hydraulic activity

The classification of concrete additives depends on their roles:

  1. Water Reducing
    They reduce the amount of water that needs to be added to concrete for a particular project. These types of additives are used in larger-scale projects and are active up to 10%.
  2. Accelerating Additives
    They accelerate the rate of cement hydration, which is particularly useful for pouring concrete during colder months. Calcium chloride is used as the accelerating additive on non-reinforced concrete.
  3. Air-Entrainment
    These additives are used to introduce microscopic air bubbles to stabilize the concrete. This can prevent the concrete from cracking in colder weather.
  4. Shrinkage Reducing
    These additives are used in floor slabs, bridge decks, and buildings where the chances for curling and cracking needs to be significantly reduced.
  5. Inhibits Corrosion
    These additives are used where there is use of chloride salts. These chloride ions may corrode with steel reinforcements resulting to rusts. The areas that need this additive most include bridges, parking garages, and marine structures.
