What is a concrete adhesive?

Since concrete cannot stick to any of the surfaces on its own, a bonding agent AKA concrete adhesive must be applied to seal the two materials. Epoxy adhesives come with two individual components that are to be mixed with careful measuring to achieve the right properties. Plus, it requires temporary supports while it cures.

Concrete glues are also employed, but they are suitable for smaller DIY tasks – not heavy-duty commercial operations. These have problems with flexibility, bonding strength, gap-filling, and initial grab. Glue is ideal for sticking carpet, tiles, and kitchen parts to the concrete. And it’s the same case with contact and mastic adhesives. Plus, concrete will require sealing before applying any of these adhesive options.

How is concrete adhesive used?

Surface prep is the foremost step. The surface in question must be cleaned and gotten rid of contaminants to facilitate proper working. If it’s old, worn-out concrete that you’re dealing with, stubborn stains can also be removed with vacuum shot blasting or pressure washing.

Upon cleaning the surface thoroughly, prepare the bonding adhesive. Shake the chemical well, dilute the same with water, and mix the ingredients properly. It’s always recommended to read the manufacturer’s instructions to follow the right procedure. Depending on the area you need to work on, use a broom, brush, or a roller to carefully and systematically paint the primary layer of adhesive onto the existing surface. Once diluted with water, this adhesive mixture must be used within a set timeframe, or else it becomes unworkable. Correct measurement and consistency will make sure that the fresh concrete will adhere to the older concrete firmly. For larger commercial spaces, the area is sprayed to accelerate the process.

Make sure the concreting has been done beforehand, and you pour the new layer before the layer of adhesive dries off completely. After the fresh concrete is poured, it’s smoothened with a trowel and left to be cured later on.
